Member Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  1. Do I lose my Medicaid if I join Amida Care?
No; the way your Medicaid works changes. Amida Care works with Medicaid to provide you more complete coverage and easier access to the services you need. Amida Care becomes your insurance company under Medicaid Managed Care. Amida Care pays for most of your medical and mental health care, including doctor visits and hospital care. Regular Medicaid continues to pay for your medications, dental care, COBRA case management, Methadone Maintenance and/or Day Treatment.
  2. How does my Medicaid change?
Members choose a Primary Care Provider and specialists from the Amida Care Provider Network. By using the Amida Care Network, the Plan can make sure your Primary Care Provider (PCP) is a credentialed HIV specialist (for adults) and that any specialists you see will send the results of their findings to your PCP.
  3. Can I continue to see the same doctor(s) I see now?
Only if the doctor is a participating Provider with the Plan. If you wish to join Amida Care, you must select a PCP from the list of Providers. You can call Amida Care at any time to find out if your doctor is part of the Amida Care Network.
  4. Does Amida Care help me get housing?
Amida Care is not a housing program like HASA; it is a health plan with special care coordination services. Amida Care works with and refers its Members to organizations that provide housing and other supportive services.
  5. Is Amida Care an HMO? Is there a limit to the services you can get?
Amida Care is a Special Needs Plan (SNP). There are no limits on the care Members can receive as long as it is medically necessary. At Amida Care we believe that regular ongoing care and HIV monitoring are important to maintaining health. We want our Members to get all the care they need.
  6. Is there a co-payment I have to pay?
No; there is no co-payment for Amida Care covered services.
  7. If I want to get out of the Plan, can I?
If the Plan is not meeting your needs, please call our Member Services department. We always want to know why Members are dissatisfied. Many times there is a simple misunderstanding and once it is corrected, Members decide to stay. However, if you still want to disenroll, you must contact NY Medicaid CHOICE for a Disenrollment Form. Amida Care cannot disenroll Members. Once NY Medicaid CHOICE gets this form back, you will be disenrolled the first of the next month.
  8. I want to enroll; can my spouse or partner enroll with me?
Only adults with HIV can join Amida Care. However, Members can enroll their children whether or not they are HIV+.

Amida Care is an NYS sponsored HIV Special Needs Plan that provides health care for people on Medicaid living with HIV, and for their children. Amida Care services Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. Joining an HIV SNP is voluntary. To learn about HIV SNPs, call the New York Medicaid CHOICE Helpline at 1-800-505-5678. (TTY/TDD 1-888-329-1541)
