Celebrating Pride by Using Our Voices

As we take part in joyful gatherings during LGBTQIA+ Pride Month, let’s remember the importance of advocacy as well as celebration. Recently there has been an upswing in legislation across the country that negatively impacts the LGBTQIA+ community, especially transgender, gender non-conforming and non-binary (TGNCNB) people. According to the ACLU’s map of anti-LGBTQ legislationand the Trans Legislation Tracker, over 80 anti-trans bills around the country have already been passed in 2023 alone. We must fight this legitimization of hatred however we can.

Fortunately, New York State has been a leader in protecting LGBTQTIA+ rights, and NYS Medicaid has a track record of helping individuals live their authentic lives. Where other states are restricting gender-affirming care, we can safeguard TGNCNB care by passing legislation to end discrimination and protect transgender youth.

Over the last month, Amida Care has advocated for legislation that will bolster protections for TGNCNB New Yorkers’ right to access care with the dignity and respect we all deserve. Recently Amida Care participated in two lobby days, during which we expressed support for legislation including Senator Hoylman-Sigal and Assembly Member Bronson’s bill to make New York a safe haven for transgender youth and their families. The bill recently passed both Senate and Assembly, and awaits Governor Hochul’s signature.

Our advocacy has contributed to passage of other important legislation confirming New York’s commitment to protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. The Equality Act prohibits laws, policies, or practices in NYS that target people for discrimination or criminal prosecution based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. Additionally, legislation was passed that adds gender identity or expression as a protected class in New York’s human rights law.

Pride is about celebrating, but it’s also about taking action and protecting the rights we have fought so hard to obtain, for ourselves and for future generations.
